Kanonkop Wine Estate
First Growth of the Cape — Paul Sauer Cabernet blend and open-fermenter Pinotage.
About Kanonkop Wine Estate
A four-generation family estate on the Simonsberg foothills, universally regarded as one of South Africa's five great red-wine producers. Paul Sauer and Black Label Pinotage are the flagships.
Kanonkop is where serious South African wine lovers go. There's no fine-dining restaurant, no infinity pool, no boutique — just a working cellar, a modest tasting room and some of the most collectable red wine made in the country.
History
Owned by the Krige family since the 1930s, Kanonkop was one of the first estates to be granted 'Estate Wine' status in 1973 and has been continuously guided by cellar master Abrie Beeslaar (three-time International Winemaker of the Year) since 2002. Old-fashioned open concrete fermenters, hand plunging and traditional basket presses are all still in daily use.
The wine experience
Seated tastings in a simple, comfortable room lead through the range, ending with Paul Sauer and — on some flights — the Black Label Pinotage. The optional cellar tour walks past the open fermenters and basket presses, and is one of the best in the Cape.
