Cape Winelands Region Guide
Franschhoek Wine Farms
The French Corner — Huguenot heritage, Cap Classique bubbly and mountain-ringed elegance.
About the Franschhoek Winelands
A single narrow valley of French-founded estates, boutique cellars and some of the country's most celebrated restaurants, wrapped in mountains on three sides.
Franschhoek — literally 'French Corner' — is a 25-minute drive from Stellenbosch through the Helshoogte Pass. The valley was settled by French Huguenot refugees in 1688 and their family names (De Villiers, Malan, Roux) still mark the estates today. It is the Cape's most polished food and wine destination.
History
The Huguenots arrived in 1688 fleeing religious persecution in France and were granted farms in the valley. They brought viticulture know-how and named their farms after towns they'd left behind — La Motte, La Provence, Champagne. Sparkling wine (Méthode Cap Classique) remains a Franschhoek signature.
What makes Franschhoek special
Franschhoek is compact, walkable-by-vineyard, and food-obsessed. The famous Franschhoek Wine Tram links a dozen estates on a hop-on hop-off circuit, and the town's main street holds more top-rated restaurants per square metre than anywhere else in Africa.
Best time to visit
Year-round, but the valley truly sparkles from November to March. The Bastille Festival (mid-July) is the highlight of the winter calendar — a full weekend of French food, wine and street parades.
Getting there
1 hour from Cape Town via the N1 and R45, or 25 minutes from Stellenbosch over the scenic Helshoogte Pass. Once in the valley, everything is within 10 minutes of the village.
