Cape Winelands Region Guide
Stellenbosch Wine Farms
South Africa's red-wine capital — oak-lined streets, Cape Dutch estates and world-class Cabernet.
About the Stellenbosch Winelands
Home to more than 150 wineries, Stellenbosch is the beating heart of the Cape Winelands and the country's most decorated red-wine district.
Stellenbosch sits 45 minutes east of Cape Town, ringed by the Simonsberg, Helderberg and Stellenbosch mountains. The town itself is a walkable university village of Cape Dutch gables and coffee shops, while the surrounding wards produce some of the Southern Hemisphere's finest Cabernet Sauvignon, Bordeaux blends and Chenin Blanc.
History
Founded in 1679 by Simon van der Stel, Stellenbosch is South Africa's second-oldest European settlement. Vines were planted within a decade of settlement and the region has been producing wine continuously for over 340 years — longer than Napa, Barossa or Marlborough.
What makes Stellenbosch special
Stellenbosch is defined by its variety of terroir. Within a 20-minute drive you can taste elegant, cool-climate Chardonnay from the upper Banghoek Valley, muscular Cabernet from the Helderberg slopes, and old-vine Chenin from the sandy Bottelary Hills. No other South African region packs this much diversity into so small an area.
Best time to visit
October to April for long, dry days and full vineyard canopy. January and February are the harvest months — the estates are busy but the vineyards are at their most photogenic. Winter (June–August) is quieter, cheaper and pairs beautifully with fireside tastings.
Getting there
45 minutes from Cape Town CBD via the N2 and R310. Distances between farms are short — most estates are within 10–20 minutes of each other, making it the easiest region to visit four cellars in a day without feeling rushed.
Why go with Stellenbosch
- World-class Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux-style blends
- Walkable historic town centre with restaurants and galleries
- Highest concentration of Michelin-mentioned restaurants in the Cape
- Perfect base for exploring Franschhoek and Paarl on the same trip
