About Rust en Vrede

A red-only estate on the Helderberg with a Relais & Châteaux fine-dining restaurant and the more relaxed 1694 bistro. Home of the flagship Rust en Vrede Estate blend.

Owned by former Springbok Jean Engelbrecht since 1978, Rust en Vrede was the first Cape estate to produce only red wine. The property houses two very different food experiences and one of the most consistent estate red programmes in the country.

History

The farm dates to 1694. Legendary winemaker Jannie Engelbrecht replanted for red-only production in the 1970s, and the flagship Estate blend has been the house wine at Nelson Mandela's Nobel Peace Prize dinner.

The wine experience

Seated tastings in the modern cellar door include the single-vineyard Cabernet and Syrah alongside the Estate blend. Restaurant guests can add on cellar tours by request.
