Rustenberg Wines
Historic Ida's Valley estate with resident dairy, formal gardens and the Peter Barlow Cabernet.
About Rustenberg Wines
One of the oldest estates in the Cape, still farming vines, wheat, oaks and a working Jersey dairy in a valley below the Simonsberg. Peter Barlow Cabernet is the flagship.
Rustenberg has been in continuous production since 1682 and remains one of the most authentically 'estate' properties on the wine route — vineyards, oaks, cattle, formal gardens and a small cellar door with no fuss.
History
In Barlow family hands since 1941, Rustenberg has been a consistent presence at the top of Cape Cabernet and Chardonnay reviews. The gardens (open to visitors) are also nationally renowned.

- Very quiet mid-week — an antidote to the busier R44 estates
- Historic gardens are worth the visit on their own
Cons
- No restaurant — plan lunch elsewhere
- Closed Sundays
- The road in from Ida's Valley is narrow and unmarked
- Small tasting room — not suited to groups over 8
